Maria’s story

Here is an example of this tool in action:

Maria has been complaining that her knees ache when she stands for a long period or walks for more than a few minutes.

Maria’s support worker Harry helps Maria to arrange an appointment with the doctor.

The doctor talks to Maria about the issue, then, after measuring her height and weight, she advises Maria that she needs to lose weight because her BMI (Body Mass Index) is too high.

Maria has had an ongoing issue with her weight. In the past, she has been strongly encouraged to diet, but it didn’t work. Maria hated being told what she could and couldn’t eat, and she hated being reminded by staff that she must lose weight.

Maria’s mom recognizes that there is an issue, but loves to cook family favorites with Maria such as cakes, creamy chocolate éclairs and custard tarts. It’s one of the things they really enjoy doing together and she doesn’t want this to stop.

Maria’s support worker Harry and other members of Maria’s staff team have a meeting to discuss the situation. They use the donut tool to help them to clarify the team’s roles and responsibilities.
