Using the information

Once you have finished using the tool, you need to consider the following questions:

How would you discuss the roles and responsibilities with Maria?

For the donut to work, there needs to be agreement and clarity. You need to:

  • Look at each heading with Maria and check through the details.
  • Make sure the core responsibilities match with Maria’s expectations and discuss any that are there to meet an organizational policy or contractual agreement.

Make sure you are clear on Maria’s definition of what is not your responsibility and be sure that what is in “creativity and judgement” reflects Maria’s preferred way to be supported.

How would you use this information to update Maria’s one-page profile?

You can use the information in this tool to update Maria’s one-page profile by looking for information on what’s important to her. For example, it is important to Maria to cook with her mom and for her decisions to be respected.

The “creativity and judgment” section will also provide information for the “How best to support” someone section of the one page profile. For example, it’s clear that it’s important for Maria not to be constantly reminded about her diet and to be given support to make decisions for herself.

What have you learned about Maria that you could add to her support plan or the job description of her support staff?

You need to make sure that the roles and responsibilities are reflected in Maria’s support plan  by making sure any support guidelines clarify what must happen and what must not.

Make sure the core responsibilities are recorded on a person-centered job description for Maria, so that future selections Maria makes are based on the roles and responsibilities that have been agreed.
