What is ‘important to’ someone is what they say through their own words and behaviors about what really matters to them and makes them feel happy, fulfilled and content. This may be important people, places, the rhythm and pace of life routines or possessions.
It’s important to recognize that if we only focus on what is important to a person then they may be at risk, or indulge in a lifestyle that affects their health or safety.
Remember, you need to listen to the whole person. What they are saying with their words may be different to what they are communicating with their behavior. In fact, behavior is often the more reliable indicator.
